The commercial production of European Union fresh pears is mainly concentrated in Western European countries, with nearly 80% of the production coming from Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. According to a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of agriculture, the commercialized production of European Union fresh pears in 2019 / 20 (2019 / 07-2020 / 06) is expected to be about 2.079 million tons, a decrease of about 13% over the previous quarter. Each of the five countries accounted for 25%, 18%, 15%, 15% and 8% of the total output respectively. The non-commercial production of fresh pears is mainly planted in the gardens or farms of residents, which are generally used to meet the independent consumption needs of their families.

In the quarter of 2018 / 19, the European Union exported 310500 tons of fresh pears, and its main export markets were Belarus, Brazil, Morocco, Norway and Kazakhstan. As exporters attach great importance to Canada, China is the seventh largest importer of fresh pears in the EU, although it is still an emerging market. In the quarter of 2018 / 19, China imported 7711 tons of fresh pears from the European Union, a year-on-year increase of 52%. It is expected that the export volume of products to China will further increase in 2019 / 20.
